Iluka's Capel operation includes two synthetic rutile kilns. The SR1 kiln was placed on care and maintenance in 2009. In 2021 Iluka announced the execution of SR1’s restart. Site refurbishment work was completed over 2022 and the kiln was restarted successfully in December. SR1 has an annual production capacity of 110 - 120 thousand tonnes.

Adjacent to SR1 is the SR2 kiln, which is currently operating with an annual production capacity of ~225 thousand tonnes. The synthetic rutile process upgrades ilmenite to a synthetic rutile product with a titanium dioxide content of 89-94%.
