Overview

The Balranald development consists of two large, deep, rutile-rich mineral sands deposits, Balranald and Nepean, in the Murray Basin region of south west New South Wales. Because of the depth of these deposits (Balranald ~60 metres underground) relative to traditional mineral sands operations, Iluka is progressing an innovative, underground mining technique at Balranald. Potential benefits of this approach are expected to include lower capital-intensive development, phased production expansion and lower environmental impacts.
